The Culture of the Europeans. (1,660 pages) 2006 HarperCollins.

A wide-ranging comparative work on the evolution of cultural markets in Europe from the end of the 18th century to the present. It examines the establishment of a broad literary and musical culture through such vehicles as the press, the popular novel and popular music, to the rise of the gramophone, the radio and the cinema and the domination of television. It maps the growth and transformation of cultural markets throughout Europe: what its products are, how are they distributed, how they are consumed, who the consumers are, how the industries are regulated, which conditions are required for both production and consumption, and the extent to which one can speak of the Americanisation of culture. This book has attracted the backing of the Nuffield Foundation (fellowship 1997-98), the Leverhulme Foundation (Major Fellowship 2000-2003) and the British Academy (travel grants)
